Summary: Low-Carb Approach to Diabetes Treatment   PDF  Print  E-mail
Why did I adopt the low-carbohydrate approach to treatment of diabetes?

These views are based on my own experiences and the rationale for this approach. Expert advice should be sought before changes are made to a person’s treatment regime.

Here is a summary..

Because I wanted the best means to achieve near normal blood glucoses on a continuous moment to moment basis.

When?

I adopted this in 1998, after becoming aware of the logic and outcomes in other people.

What have been the benefits?

  • Much improved blood glucose outcomes – not only as reflected in HbA1c outcomes, but also a significantly flatter glucose curve on a continuous basis throughout the day. An insulin pump was not able to produce the improvement that this regime did.
  • Less frequent and much less serious and debilitating hypoglycaemia.
  • Much decreased insulin dose requirement, so that the inherent unpredictability and variability in insulin dose absorption is also very significantly decreased. Very rapid acting insulin only needed for occasional high blood sugar levels.
  • Much reduced debilitating and unpleasant effects of delayed/impaired stomach emptying (gastroparesis). This condition is common in diabetes and is also a major contributor to blood glucose variation, because of unpredictability of absorption of food. The more the carbohydrate in the diet the greater the unpredictability. Simple logic!
  • Very significantly improved quality of life, resulting not only from improved objective diabetes outcomes, but also the psychological benefit of having a system to work with in daily life that will produce the desired outcomes if implemented.
  • The cessation or slowing down of my previously inextricably developing diabetes complications including retinopathy, neuropathy and the very early indications of possible development of kidney disease.
  • The greatly simpler approach to the whole management of my diabetes

Disadvantages?

  1. Restriction on carbohydrate intense foods. Oh well! I did not choose to have diabetes but I do choose to work with the best way of normalising blood glucose!
